The new Zamboni at the Coal Street Ice Complex looked good in its garage, but its unpredictable solution to Thursday night’s curling surface left many frustrated or confused at the end of the first night in Anthracite Curling Club’s first night of League play.

Schuylkill Blind Squirrels capitalized on one of the few predictable ends during its prime-time draw with division foes Team RAMROD, scoring four points in the 3rd to secure a 9-3 win. The Squirrels are 1-0 and in first place in the Buckwheat Division of ACC League play. The team curls next week at 8 versus another division foe, Team 4. (more…)

Schuylkill Blind Squirrels faces its first league test this Thursday night at 8 when the team faces friends Team Ramrod.

Both squads are aligned in the Buckwheat Division of the Fell Conference, which we presume is the Norman Fell Conference (?). Ok, maybe not.

According to releases from club management, the regular season will be conducted over the next three months, and the Squirrels will play nine draws. There are 16 teams in four divisions and two conferences. Division names are derived from sizes of coal nuggets, and the conferences are named in honor of anthracite pioneers, or Jack Tripper’s landlords.

Division champions will face each other in the Conference championships of the first round of playoffs, and those winners will meet to determine the league champion in August.

Blind Squirrels Skip Joshua Sophy makes up for this sloppy delivery by dropping the stone near the button. This gave the team shot rock, and because it bounced an opponent’s stone from the house, the team was sitting on another two points.

A missed shot followed, so Sophy only had to drop a conservative second shot in the guard zone to score the points.

Winner, winner. Taco dinner.

After last week’s heart-breaking loss at the hands of WINOs, anticipation was pitched for Thursday evening’s 6 p.m. draw against JEMM.

When sub-Skip Joshua Sophy’s final shot in the seventh end went awry, the Squirrels earned just a point that frame and lost the draw, 5-4. With that bitter taste still on their tongues, the team entered its final match of Anthracite Curling Club’s Mini-League hungry for its first taste of victory.

Instead, the team waited.

And waited.

And then started, and waited. (more…)
